a low-lying area of a city with small independent shops and factories, particularly the area of eastern downtown Tokyo near Tokyo Bay; the shitamachi. <▲> 「下町」に相当する英語は見当たらない. たとえば “downtown” と訳すことはできない. 「下町育ちです」というようなことを述べるとすれば, I was brought up in Asakusa [Ueno, Tsukiji, etc.] のように言ってから, 説明をするよりない.
下町言葉 the language spoken in the shitamachi area of Tokyo.
下町情緒 the friendly atmosphere of the shitamachi section (of a city).
下町育ち a shitamachi bred person.
